In this day and age, technologic advancements make it easy to often do business with a customer without the customer ever stepping foot in your door. Call me old fashioned, but some of us business folk still prefer or require face-to-face, real interactions with our customers. One of the easiest and cheapest ways to increase foot traffic in-store is to use social media incentives such as contests, deals, and offers.

Word of the day / Mention this post

Create an incentivized post outlining what a potential customer must do or say to use the coupon to receive the exclusive offer. This type of post is suitable for Twitter or Facebook.

For example, you could post “Mention CARROT to your server to receive 10% off your order! Valid TODAY only!”

Or you could post, “Come by our Service Bay this TUESDAY and mention you saw this post on [insert social media channel] and get a 10% discount off of your oil change! Valid Tuesday only.”

This type of post works well for driving traffic in-store, especially during slower, down times.

Like and Comment

Another Facebook incentive, design a deal for customers to receive if they like and comment on a certain post.

For example, you could post “Want a 50% off shopping spree for this weekend? LIKE this post and COMMENT about why you should win. We’ll pick a random winner.”

Or you could post, “In the comments below, post your favourite picture of you using our product. One lucky commenter will win [prize]!”

This type of post works well for increasing reach because now the network of people that surrounds your potential customer (who liked and commented on your post) will be exposed to your post and business page.

Pin It to Win It

Post on your social media channels encouraging customers to come on down to your store and take a picture of an item in your store that they’d like to win, ask them to pin it, and tag it with your business. After the contest closes, you can pick your lucky winner(s) and award them the item (or a discount off of it).

This type of post works best on Pinterest with retail stores with physical items for sale.

Photo Contest

A final example of types of incentives you can create to drive traffic in-store is a user-generated photo contest. This contest requires customers to take a photo of themselves (and their shopping party!) in your store or restaurant and post it on your business Facebook or Twitter page. Every month (or at whatever end of contest interval you choose) you can select a winner. Guess what they can win–more discounts to visit you in-store!
