Digital Marketing Insights

As of 2015, 80% of internet users own a smartphone1 .

This trend will continue to increase as more and more people are not only comfortable with using their smartphone devices to browse the web but also because smartphones are critical pieces of our lives. In this brief article, we will highlight why Google prefers mobile-friendly websites and gives them a higher rank.

What Google is doing

Google has noticed this increasing trend of smartphone or mobile internet users and as a result, they released their primary mobile-friendly algorithm update in April 2015. As the number of mobile users continually increases, Google has a few more changes up it’s sleeve for 2017 to provide the best user experience.

As more people are using their mobile phones to access the internet, Google urges various businesses to make their websites easy-to-use and very mobile-friendly, so that their mobile internet users would have no trouble loading those websites on whichever device they choose!

What actions Google is taking

Since the mobile-friendly update that was released last year, Google is also encouraging more websites to shift their website design from the traditional desktop version, to a more responsive website design. They also want to make sure that the content on mobile devices is easily accessible.

Google is also offering web masters the opportunity to check the performance level and mobile friendliness of their websites through performance tests, which can be done by simply entering their website’s URL. Google also provides other usability tests so that they can further improve the user experience of their website, especially for mobile users.

How would these changes affect you?

Google wants what their users want.

So if their users want to surf the web from their mobiles, then Google will provide them with only those websites that are mobile-friendly and can be easily viewed on their smartphones. Hence, your website would need to be mobile-friendly if you do not want to lose visitors and want to stay on top of Google’s search rankings.
