White space. What is it all about? White space is an important tool in web design that helps the creator direct attention to specific parts of a web page. Not only can it break up text into different sections, white space can highlight the most important points you are trying to convey. Why is it essential in web design? Let me take you through the following various reasons.

1. Create visual variety

You can give your design breathing room by surrounding text with white areas, which can help a page look less crowded and more relaxed. It’s important not to think of unused space as wasted space. As long as the web page looks attractive from a reader perspective, then the amount of empty space is up to the designer, knowing that the amount of space between pictures and text is important.

2. Encapsulate a main theme

A headline can stand out better depending on the amount of white space you use around it. The bigger the headline, the more empty space should be used to communicate the significance of the headline. White space can also be used for framing images and editing out undesirable parts of a picture. Sometimes a picture and a headline are the best ways to convey a story, as the headline can link to deeper text.

3. Simplify content for readers

Keeping messages short surrounded by white space allows readers to absorb the messages quicker. It’s easier to remember simple short messages than long text. The technique is similar to adding silence after a short statement, which helps make the message more memorable. White space can also surround the message to create the perception of a dream state or a meditative quality.

The more you can present your content from a minimalistic perspective, the more you can sharpen your message. If you design a web page like a holiday greeting card, it may convey a message quicker than long form text. You may want the top of your page to  look picturesque while the rest of the page is all text.

4. Control the pace of content

Sometimes empty space can communicate a pause between content. It can be used to draw the reader into certain parts of a story. One of the most powerful uses of white space can be to balance out a page layout. It can also help define the rhythm and flow of the website’s narrative. The narrative does not have to be nonstop information to hold the reader’s attention. It can include personality surrounded by empty space that leads to more in depth information. In that sense, the empty space can be used to connect different levels of knowledge.

5. Create boundaries

White space helps organize online work into separate sections or separate stories. Use it to create clarity that each section represents a specific thought. Remember to not overuse white space because it can create a choppy appearance. Learning to use the right amount comes from a bit of trial and error!

When it comes to white space, don’t be afraid. There are many benefits to using empty space and it should be taken advantage of in order to create a great website experience for your visitors.
